In 2017, the Tucson metropolitan area added over 5,000 jobs, which translated into 1.5 percent growth. That ranked Tucson 10th among peer western metropolitan areas and was an improvement over Tucson’s last place ranking during the previous two years. Tucson had solid job gains in construction; manufacturing; government; education and health services; leisure and hospitality; professional and business services; and trade, transportation, and utilities. Job growth is a key measure of a local economy’s overall performance. Increasing employment tends to drive reduced unemployment and higher income growth. It can also lead to improved prosperity, particularly when the new jobs pay above average wages.
