Tucson economy: Area lags peers in arts, entertainment, and rec jobs

Tourism is a key part of the Tucson economy. One dimension of that industry is activity in arts, entertainment, and recreation. Tucson tied Colorado Springs for 9th out of the 12 western metropolitan areas tracked on the Dashboard in per capita arts, entertainment, and recreation jobs. Per capita employment in these sectors provides a gauge of leisure opportunities available to residents and visitors. Tucson’s per capita employment in arts, entertainment, and recreation took a big hit during the Great Recession and has not yet recovered, in contrast to the State of Arizona. Rebounding job gains lately suggest that we may see improved performance moving forward.
