Join us for breakfast with Eller’s George Hammond and Anthony Chan, former Chase chief economist, as they offer analysis and insights on what to expect for the global, state, and local economies in the future.
The Arizona economy rebounded rapidly from the initial shock of the pandemic. The state has replaced all of the jobs lost from February to April of 2020 and is breaking new ground again. The unemployment rate is well below pre-pandemic levels and near the national rate. Even so, the labor market is in turmoil as firms struggle to hire while many workers rethink their career paths. On top of that, inflation spiked in recent months to levels not seen in 40 years and Russia invaded Ukraine, driving gasoline prices up significantly.
Where are the global, national, state, and local economies headed next? Will increasingly restrictive monetary policy succeed in bringing inflation down without causing a recession? Will state and local house prices moderate? Or will housing affordability continue to plummet? When will the travel and tourism sector fully rebound? Will manufacturing jobs continue to grow?
