Tucson economy: Tucson teacher wages lag U.S., peer cities

In 2016, the secondary school teacher wage for the Tucson Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) was $39,927, after adjustment for the cost of living. This ranked Tucson last among peer western MSAs. Accounting for differences in the relative cost of living among metropolitan areas allows for a direct comparison of how many locally priced goods and services each wage will buy. Tucson’s cost of living was 4.2% less than the U.S. average in 2016. This was relatively low compared to peer western MSAs, but not enough to offset low teacher pay.
